3. Immerse yourself in skateboarding history by visiting The Turf's site
One of the most anticipated projects in the Greenfield area is the restoration of The Turf. It was a widely used skate park in the city, with people widely using it to hang out with friends during the 80s. Formerly known as the Surf-N-Turf, this area featured large bowls housed inside a building. It was one of the few sites that allowed skaters to practice all year long. Famous skater Tony Hawk even graced the area.
The park closed down in 1996, but efforts to restore it have gained national attention. The area is a cultural milestone, being one of the few places where skaters could freely do what they loved. For the restoration project, the goal is to encourage a new generation of skaters to experience the park's former glory. Local community members were consulted to determine the architecture of the new park.
The Turf will rise once again at its former site on Loomis Road, across a redevelopment site. People interested in learning more about the project may send an email to [email protected] for more information.
