What Is Popcorn Ceiling?
Popcorn ceiling is a unique style of texture that was common in homes built in the 1970s and 80s. This style has the small rough "bumps" that cover the entire ceiling.

It was originally used to create an extra sound barrier in the ceiling. Older homes didn't have the same noise reduction our newer home installations do. So they created these little tricks to help keep noise reduced in multi-story homes. But the practice became so common it appeared in nearly all home styles in that time.

Modern homes have much better sound reduction built in with the insulation and drywall features.
Why Have Popcorn Ceilings Removed?
There's plenty of reasons to remove a popcorn ceiling. First and foremost, it's not the current style of modern day homes. And it definitely isn't appealing to look at.

Plus if you're looking to sell your home one day, this tend to be a large turn-off to potential buyers. Getting is removed will only help your home feel more updated.

As with any old ceiling type, there's a greater chance it will show signs of age. Popcorn ceilings tend to show age by yellowing and making the bumps appear damaged or "diseased" in a way. This could cause you to need repairs.

Can I DIY Remove Popcorn Ceilings?
Yes you absolutely can remove the popcorn ceilings on your own. On the basic side, you'll need to do the following steps:
  • Remove everything from the room and lay down drop cloths
  • Cover any outlets or fans that would get dirty
  • Fill a spray bottle with warm water
  • Spray the warm water on a 3' x 3' section (small sections at a time)
  • Don't over saturate the popcorn coating as it could damage the drywall
  • Wait about 20 minutes and then scrape the popcorn bumps off the ceiling
  • Be careful not to press too hard and damage the drywall
  • Continue with more sections until the whole ceiling is complete
  • Cleanup the drop cloth as that has caught all the popcorn pieces
